Russia has stepped up its assault on Kyiv as world leaders “visit” the Ukrainian capital in a desperate attempt to delay the Russian bombardment.
According to reports, fighting between Ukrainian, Russian, and mercenary forces has broken out in the city’s outskirts even as Russia hurls countless missiles into the city.
The careless and clumsy attacks made by the Russians attempting to destroy facilities associated with the Ukrainian resistance have brought about heavy civilian casualties.
On Tuesday, two apartment buildings were hit with incoming Russian missiles, causing the residents to flee, and resulting in two fatalities.
Earlier this week two journalists with Fox News were killed and a third was injured when their vehicle came under fire near the outskirts of Kyiv. According to Fox News, the journalists died engaging in risky, onsite reporting.
Ukrainian authorities said that a Russian airstrike hit a maternity hospital in the Southern city of Mariupol. Video footage showed 17 wounded civilians being pulled out of the hospital on stretchers. Authorities have not yet reported any deaths directly caused by the airstrike.
However, as the Russian attacks continue to intensify, the overall deaths from one week of war creep up into the thousands, even by conservative estimates.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged serious losses. They said that 498 Russian soldiers had been killed, and over 1500 wounded. This information comes as Russian forces are accused of killing civilians and robing and looting stores for food and clothing, and testifies to the poor order of the Russian advance.
