The latest in a series of tragic mass shootings took place at Greenwood park mall in Greenwood, Indiana. A man entered the mall with a rifle and ammunition and began shooting, according to Greenwood police chief James Ison. There were multiple 911 calls placed and law enforcement responded to the emergency.
There have been multiple shootings in the past few months including a shooting at a Buffalo, New York shopping mall, a Uvalde Texas school, and a Fourth of July parade in Highland Illinois, but this shooting stands out. In these three (above-mentioned) shootings, the shooter either got away or was killed by law enforcement. This time, that was not the case. A civilian with a gun managed to kill the shooter, ending the bloodshed immediately and saving countless lives.
Although tragic, the death toll for this particular shooting was much lower than others of its kind, with only three dead and two wounded.
“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” said Chris Bailey, the Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police. The mayor of Greenwood asks for prayers for victims and first responders on a Facebook post. He also thanked the armed bystander who brought the rampage to a halt. "This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation."
In the wake of the violence, Police have cleared the area, and there seems to be no ongoing threat. A suspicious backpack was searched but no dangerous items were found.
The hero of the story is yet to be identified. According to Fox News, Chief James Ison called him, “a good Samaritan with a handgun." This incident continues the debate over gun laws in a world where the "good guy with a gun" is thought to be a myth.
