Book Burning's Returned?
Book burning: a practice of the 20th century Nazi Party, the 19th century French revolutionists, and "The Party" in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
You wouldn't think this would be common place in any free society today... right?
The Scoop
A French-language school board for southwestern Ontario, Conseil scolaire cathique Providence, launched an "educational program" in 2019 called Giving Back to Mother Earth. It's mission was replace library books "that had outdated content."
More than 4.700 children's books from 30 different Canadian schools were the target of the attack, but the what was targeted did not just include children's books.
There were also old encyclopedias with "outdated content" and historical accounts of Canadas discovery and founding. There where even French and Belgian comics such as the beloved Tintin, Asterix and Obelix, and Lucky Luke.
All of these books where destroyed in the "flame of purification" ceremony.
A video designed to explain the ritual to young students explained, "We bury the ashes of racism, discrimination, and stereotypes in the hope that we will all grow up in an inclusive country where all can live in prosperity and security."
The Scandal
This effort eventual turned scandalous, but not because of the book burning.
Lyne Cossette, CSC Providence's spokeswomen, told the National Post that "Many Aboriginal knowledge keepers and elders participated and were consulted at various at various stages."
One of those " Aboriginal knowledge keepers" was Suzy Kies, a co-chairman of the Liberal Party's Indigenous Peoples' Commission.
Ms. Kies resigned from her job as co-chairman, telling Radio-Canada, "I refuse to have my story used to harm Justin Trudeau and our party."
When the prime minister was asked about the book burning, he doubled down on his previous position, stating that, "on a personal level, I would never agree to the burning of books."
