OPINION: The Positive Impact of No-Filter Social Media Use

A Fox News report recently showed that college-age students are trending towards not wanting to use any filters in their Instagram posts and stories.

There has always been pressure for women to look like a model on Instagram, but the simple fact is that most of them will never attain this illusion. It is no secret that when I went to college from 1992 to 1996 for my bachelor’s degree, I suffered from anorexia, which almost took my life. If it were not for spending years going to an amazing therapist, who finally taught me to love myself, I guarantee I would not be alive today.

Therefore, I went into the field of mental health. I wanted women to know the immense value they have by just being themselves. However, when women look at Instagram stories and posts, they often see celebrities and models, as well as everyday people, using extreme filtering, which enhances the attractiveness or physical beauty of an individual.

The pressure to change one’s appearance on social media can be overwhelming; and with the click of a button, many do. Consequently, this contributes to the blurring of what is real and what is not. Many find themselves set apart from others in a world of literal smoke and mirrors, where you can never be 100% sure about anything or anyone.

Over the years, teens and young adults have been especially susceptible to this. But not anymore. According to the Fox News report, young America is tired of seeing people blurred out and filtered. They are starting to use no-filter apps, in which you cannot modify your appearance. One example of this on the app store, is called NoFilter – Photo Spots. This app focuses on non-filtered pictures of yourself, at different destinations all over the world.

This is one step in the right direction, for people who want to see things that are 100% real—as if that’s too much to ask.

It is my professional opinion that this is a great start for people to begin seeing themselves in a more positive light. People will begin to focus on what is real and hopefully learn to love themselves and stop comparing themselves to other people. God created us individually for a reason, and He loves us just the way we are. We should all love people for being themselves.
