“In considering potential district court nominees, the White House learned that Senator Rand Paul will not return a blue slip on Chad Meredith," Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman said in a statement Friday. "Therefore, the White House will not nominate Mr. Meredith."
The longstanding Senate practice is that senators return blue slips giving consent to the nomination of judges in their home states, effectively allowing them to block any potential pick for a lifetime judicial appointment.
The alleged deal between McConnell and Biden to appoint Mr. Meredith was first reported on by The Louisville Courier-Journal in June. This comes as Democrats have pressed Biden to act more aggressively to shore up abortion rights after the Supreme Court struck down the landmark Roe v. Wade.
